Day 05 - 08/24/25 - Whitehorse to Dawson City

It was once again an early rise to put out our checked luggage at 6 AM for the trip to Dawson city. We elected to purchase snacks the day before and use those for our breakfast meal so we were ready to go at our 7:30am report time. This would allow us to sleep in until about 6:45am.


Back on board the motor coach, we found our normal seats in the back of the bus and soon we were off on the Alaska Highway for a few miles before turning north on the Klondike Highway to Dawson. Much of the day was spent traveling with trees on both sides of us not much visibility. We did make a stop at the Montague roadhouse although we did not get out this year. We did make a stop at Carmacks for a rest break and a chance to buy snacks or whatever. We elected to purchase some Wonder bars which are a delectable candy bar. Our travels took us farther north and we made a lunch stop at the Minto RV Park & campground, which is where we stopped last year. We were served a simple meal of your choice of potato leek soup or chicken noodle soup, Mac 'n Cheese, plus a cold cut sandwich, dessert, some salad and a drink. After lunch, we all gathered together for a group picture and then re-boarded the bus.

We didn't make a stop at Stewart Crossing like we did last year which is a shame because it's a nice stop. Note that there is an electric vehicle charging station here so if you're coming to Yukon at the middle of nowhere, there is a charging station.


Next stop was at the Tintina trench for photos of the geological fault that runs about 400-500 miles and is used by the wildlife as a corridor getting from one part of Yukon to another. Last year we were here a few days later than today and it was much more vibrant in color.

We arrived in Dawson around 5 PM and Judy drove the bus on a simplified city tour and it was very familiar to Angela and I.  We quickly checked into the Holland America Dawson City Inn before heading over to the Keno lounge for dinner. We sat outside on the patio and were entertained by a 3 piece combo playing folk music.  They were were quite good. 



We were joined by new friends Cliff & Elaine from the other group and we enjoyed a nice chat with them.  After dinner we went to Diamond Tooth Gerties for the 10pm show.  The show is a cancan show with 3 dancers and a male and female vocalist.  After the show I struck up a conversation with the fellow seated behind us.  Paul is a dead ringer for Ted Lasso of the Apple TV series, and he and his wife Victoria were from Toronto. After an hour of great conversation, we said our goodbyes and headed off to our room to get some sleep.  We did meet then the next day while walking around town.






 We have some fun things planned for tomorrow.

 This year's Alaska cruise is a semi repeat of what we did last year. We're starting in Vancouver and sailing north for three days on the Zaandam with a stop in Juneau and getting off the ship a day later in Skagway. From there we will board the White Pass & Yukon Railway to Frazier BC where we will be transferred to a bus that will take us to Whitehorse where we'll overnight. The same bus will then take us another day to get to Dawson City where we'll spend a couple days before flying to Fairbanks. In Fairbanks we will overnight and do a special tour before being bussed down to Denali, where we will spend a couple days, including one day on an excursion out to see Mount Denali, and various animals.  After Denali will be on a day long train ride down to Anchorage and will spend a couple days and do something special that I'll disclose later before getting on the Nieuw Amsterdam in Whittier and sailing southbound for seven days back to Vancouver.  During the trip...

Day 03 - 08/22/25 - Juneau

 Today started out early once again. We were up at 7 AM in order to eat breakfast and attend an 8:30am disembarkation meeting on the World Stage. This presentation was given by Claire, our cruise director, and she covered all of the details concerning our upcoming disembarkation tomorrow in Skagway along with the land tour that follows. During the presentation, she specifically said that if you were carrying a CPAP machine, which I am,  we should tell the Shore Excursions staff upon leaving the theater so that they could notify the proper people at the airline in Dawson City. When I got to the Shore Excursion people, the lady did not care whether I have CPAP or not because once I was off the ship, she said it was not their responsibility. Since we've done this trip several times before I know the proper procedure and there was never in the past need to declare the other CPAP machine because a medical device is exempt from the carry-on rules limitations. Day 02 - 08/21/25 - At Sea to Juneau

 Day two turned out to be a pretty busy day. It all started with the 9 AM coffee chat with Claire and Dominic, the on board naturalist. Dominic is from Hawaii and has a background in marine biology and was very good at explaining his interest in the natural world of Alaska. He then followed with a presentation on binoculars. He covered how they work, what are the best features, and how to use them. It was pretty interesting. His talk was followed by multimedia presentation by Claire on the main stage about whales of the north Pacific. There's some beautiful photographs and commentary about whale behavior and focused primarily on the humpback whales and the orcas or killer whales, even though the latter are genetically a dolphin.  I should note there were many other activities from which to choose from but I'll only comment on those we participate in..   After lunch, I found a seat at the window in the Explorer's Lounge on deck five aft where I updated my blog and watched ...
