Day 14 - 09/02/25 - Glacier Bay

Today was all about Glacier Bay. After breakfast around 8:30 AM, we picked up the contingent of rangers who arrived by a small boat and transferred themselves to our ship while we're moving. We were in the fog bank and staying in that fog bank for quite some time. It eventually dissipated and we had clear sailing before injuring a second fog bank. After we passed through that fog, we had no further fog the rest of the day, and it was quite nice with blue skies. As we sailed up the fjord, we encountered a number of sea otters probably the most we've ever seen in the many trips we've been here).

Once we reached Marjorie glacier, the ship was positioned with the port side facing the glacier. We stayed in that position about an hour before the ship was rotated with the starboard side facing the glacier. All this time I photographed the glacier and the surrounding territory along with the Grand Pacific glacier, which is next to Marjorie glacier. There are also a number of seals basking on ice flows near the face of the glacier and with my long leg camera was able to photograph the number of them. All throughout our stay at the glacier there were no calving actions. Calving is what happens when large portions of the face of the glacier break off and fall into the ocean.

I have many more pictures, but the internet is too slow to include them in this post.

With our time completed at the glacier, we slowly began to sail away. During the sail away process, the Rangers gave a number of programs and we also had a Tlingit Lady, Kathleen,  present  some cultural information about her people. Ranger Matt also did a presentation on sculptures with respect to glaciers.

Around 5:30 PM, the Ranger's small boat came alongside the Nieuw Amsterdam and the Rangers and other members of their party transferred to the small boat to go back to their shoreside home. After the transfer, we increased speed and sailed towards our next port of call, which would be Skagway, Alaska.

After our typical Lido dinner, we attended the evening show which was a renowned violinist, Gary Lovini,  who was very good. After that we listen to a couple sets of the singer pianist in the Billboard Onboard area of the ship. After that, we headed back to our room to get an early start on bed as we have an early arrival tomorrow morning in Skagway. We don't have any real concrete plans for Skagway as we were just here about 10 days ago. But I'm sure we can figure something out.
